Grid Aggregations

Thousands of PV systems, in one request

For large amounts of geographically-dispersed solar PV, Grid Aggregations are designed to make life easier by tracking the combined output of tens of thousands of PV systems with a single request. They are also usually more robust for large numbers of PV systems, thanks to empirically derived orientation, shading and derating factors. If you’re unsure whether this is the right approach for your problem, take a read of this article.

The Grid Aggregation API request returns forecasts or estimated actuals for the aggregated (summed up) PV power output from all PV systems installed in a given market or geographic region. All data are generated using the Rapid Update forecasting system via Global Coverage.

Because each Grid Aggregation consists of thousands of locations and takes effort to set up, you cannot currently set up your own (but this may change in the future). The following example is for an existing Grid Aggregation, to show you how to request data and what is returned.

Once you’ve registered for the Solcast API, you’ll be assigned a test Grid Aggregation. This will allow you to download live sample forecast and recent estimated actuals data in a variety of formats.

Trial of your own Grid Aggregation

If you would like to trial a Grid Aggregation for your specific power system or region, contact us and Solcast will add a live trial aggregation (usually within days).

Historical Requests

Historical requests need to be made manually because a Grid Aggregation(s) needs to be created in the system. Data is available for as far back as 15 years.

Recent Requests

Recent requests span the past few months up until a few days ago and are included with Live and Forecast data. Recent requests for Grid Aggregations are coming in early 2019. You’ll initially be able to download the Recent data for your Grid Aggregations from the Solcast API Toolkit.

Live (Estimated Actual) and Forecast Requests

These API requests return ‘Live’ (near real-time) data from 7 days ago to the present time, and Forecast data from the present time to 7 days ahead. Inside satellite coverage regions (all continents except Antarctica), these estimated actuals and Forecasts update every 10 to 15 minutes.

Request 5, 10, 15 or 20 minute granularity instead of the standard 30 minute:
